New update: Quarantine period of 7 days

As part of its vaccine passport program, Vietnam has decided to reduce the centralized quarantine period for fully vaccinated entrants from 21 days to 7 days.

This announcement was made at a meeting of the National Steering Committee for Covid-19 Prevention and Control and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism last Friday.

It is still unclear when the new quarantine period will be applied and whether it will be limited to a few destinations in Vietnam. However, this is a part of the country’s plan to test the vaccine passport resolution to resume the country’s tourism industry and many other businesses which heavily rely on international travel.

How to travel to Vietnam during the pandemic

Vietnam has quickly closed its border to prevent the spread of Covid 19 since the outbreak began in early 2020. Tourists are not permitted to obtain a visa to visit Vietnam. Even Vietnamese living abroad who want to return home must endure a lengthy wait for the government’s rescue plan.

However, as part of its efforts to save the country’s economy, the Vietnamese government continues to grant entry to certain groups of people. Because these groups of people are critical to domestic businesses, they will be allowed to enter even during the pandemic.

Those who wish to travel to Vietnam during this period must determine whether their travel purpose falls into one of these categories in order to be eligible for entry.

Who can travel to Vietnam during Covid 19 period?

Vietnam grants entry permission to the following individuals, subject to the conditions listed below. Only if the individual meets all of the requirements will he or she be granted entry permission, and then an entry visa to Vietnam.

Who can come Conditions and qualifications
Investor Must be the owner or co-owner of a business entity established in Vietnam
Business manager Must have the name on the business license of an entity in Vietnam as a legal representative

In fact, the more important the position, the easier it is to obtain entry permission and the fewer documents required. Many investors may decide to establish a company remotely, use that company as a sponsor, and relocate to Vietnam as a business owner. For many, this appears to be the most common solution. Steps to obtain entry to Vietnam

Traveling to Vietnam during the pandemic is an 8-step process. Read further  from here or below to understand each step in detail:

  1. Sponsor company: Preparing a sponsor company would be the first step of the process to bring you to Vietnam. The company must be an entity established in Vietnam, still in active mode, and proven to have regular operations (tax reports, financial statements, transactions in and out). If the company is newly established, it should not have too small a capital investment. The owner should show the evidence of capital injection in advance. Or at least the company shows some minimal proof of operation.
  2. Entry Permission: Entry Permission is the first thing to obtain. It is issued by the Local People Committee where the sponsor company is registered and is based on the sponsorship letter and relevant documents about the company and the invited person. The timeline usually takes 2-3 weeks and or can be longer depending on how “persuasive” the application can be.
  3. Visa approval letter: Successful Entry Permission is the foremost condition for a Visa application. As a result, the Immigration Office in Vietnam will issue the visa approval letter, not the Vietnamese Embassies overseas. All entry visas will be Business Visas (3 months). A person can choose to retrieve the actual visa upon arrival or from the nearest embassy where this visa approval letter will be sent for processing. This entry visa is given for entry purposes only. The person should switch to a longer-term stay permit after entering the country.
  4. Quarantine plan: All entries to Vietnam at the moment are subjects to quarantine. The quarantine period can vary for different people. By standard, it usually is 14 days (can be 21 days in some special scenarios). For those who have been fully vaccinated, a period of  7 days’ quarantine can be applied. You must spend your quarantine time in a designated hotel in the city. The list of qualified hotels is published by the local government. The hotel booking should cover the time of arrival until the end of the quarantine period.
  5. Flight ticket: A flight should only be booked after the person has in his hands the Entry Permission + Visa (or Visa approval letter) + Hotel booking for quarantine. The airlines will probably ask for additional conditions such as insurance to confirm the seat. Make sure the documents are submitted to the Airlines before the given deadline.
  6. Proof to show that you are free from Covid 19: between 3-5 days prior to the flight, make sure to take your Covid test. To board the plane to Vietnam, your test result must be negative with Covid 19. Ensure to submit the test result to the airlines before the departure date and keep a copy with you when boarding the flight. And bring the vaccination proofs as well.
  7. Arrival: Upon arrival, you will need to do a medical history declaration and a few quick check-ups. Obtain your visa on arrival if you selected this way, then board the pre-booked transportation to the hotel where you will spend your quarantine. Please note, you will not be allowed to take a regular taxi, therefore booking a special transportation arrangement is a must.
  8. Taking quarantine: Your hotel is prepared to host you for designated quarantine. You will not be allowed to walk around the hotel, your food will be delivered at the door and they will run some tests during this quarantine time as well. When your quarantine time is over, you will be taking self-quarantine at home for some days. Then Welcome to Vietnam!!
